This is a new blog series I'm publishing on PixelLook in the hope that it will offer insight to new fashion models in Second Life, and to chronicle my experiences in Second Life's fashion modelling world.
------------------------------------------
Just like getting ready for a big date, the biggest challenge you'll probably face when you're about to go to a modelling interview in SL is
what do I wear? Often, the casting director or agency owner will list a dress code or outfit requirements (eg. prepare one swimwear outfit, one formal,) but this doesn't happen all of the time.
At the open calls, castings, and agency recruiting interviews I've been to, I've naturally cammed in and scoped out the competition. I'm often underwhelmed by the style choices of other models at castings; I'm sometimes saying "wtf were they
thinking?" behind the computer. Some of the worst offenses:
• freebie, badly constructed prim hair
• those sculpted feet in shoes things... but the skintone was not even
close to their body and looked dreadful (or, in one extreme case, the model was wearing stockings with the normal skintone feet. Ummm...) This is really, really common
• trashy cutoff micro jeanshorts, body oil
• gigantic ballgowns
• 6+ facelights and bodylights
* you get the idea
Treat your interview as an excuse to show off how professional and stylish you can be. If no dress code is given, assume you should dress sophisticated, but not over the top. If you were meeting a real life model agency director, what would you wear? I guarantee it won't be a belly chain that says "<3SLUT<3" or your prom gown.
The casting/agency director certainly wants to have a good idea of your general body shape. Avoid full length skirts/gowns. Aim for a classy, business/casual type look. You could wear a high quality pair of jeans, a tank top, and then dress the outfit up with accessories (say, a neck scarf and handbag, and boots.) Or, you could wear a skirt/blouse combo (as shown below) with some stylish jewellery. The entire outfit should look intentional and harmonized.
I always look at shoes. If you insist on wearing those sculpted feet, please match them to your skintone! Invest in a couple of pairs of high-quality, basic shoes... or if you are low on L$, toss the bad freebies and keep the 1% of them that are good! You can tell a lot about an avatar by their shoes. ;)
You may have to change quickly if the casting/agency director asks... that means, generally, having a well-organized inventory and knowing where stuff is.
If the casting is for a specific designer, it will help to spend a few minutes on your own time checking out their store, and tailoring your look for the interview to match their general style.
Lastly, remember you're there to impress them, and you want to be remembered as a professional fashion model. I hope this helps and good luck with your future casting calls, auditions, interviews, and go-sees!
